Buck-Boost Transformers

Buck-Boost TransformersBuck-boost transformers are usually single-phase, four winding transformers. For 3-phase applications, it requires banking either two or three buck-boost transformers.

Buck-boost transformers are designed for two purposes. The most popular use is to lower or increase line voltage to match required load voltage. The second use is to use it as a low voltage isolation transformer for use on 12, 16, 24, 32, or 48 colt circuits.

Buck-boost transformers are simple and straight forward and designed to correct low or high voltage conditions, usually in the 5% to 27% range. The most common applications are boosting 208 volt lines to 230 or 240 volts or vice-versa. One of the most common applications is for HVAC applications for air conditioning appliances.

The Pros of using a Buck-Boost Transformer

The cost of using a buck-boost transformer is generally less than 25% of the cost of comparable transformers. Remember, they will not provide any circuit isolation when connected as an autotransformer, nor are they capable of generating a neutral.

Buck-boost transformers are smaller, lighter and less expensive than a standard isolation transformer, and they can provide five to ten times their nameplate KVA rating. Where space is critical, an isolation transformers will not fit.  Buck-boost transformers are also used because they are quieter and more efficient.

Transformers

Buck-boost transformers can have a life expectancy of 20 to 25 years. These transformers, when properly used, can give you many years of efficient, trouble-free use.

Buck-boost transformers also offer flexibility in the field by offering 24 different wiring configurations. Also, they add to that different low voltage isolation connection for low voltage lighting or control applications, and you can see the flexibility and versatility of a buck-boost transformer.

Remember when making a decision about buying any transformer, make sure the manufacturer offers high quality, efficient transformers manufactured to your specifications.  We recommend Hammond Transformers, because they have been in business for 91 years and know the state-of-the-art technology of transformers.
