Diesel 3-Phase Generators

Diesel GeneratorDiesel 3-phase generators are used in countless industrial and commercial establishments. Diesel generators are used primarily for industrial purposes such as construction, marine, mining, hospital, telecommunications, underground and agricultural applications just to name a few. They are available in various specifications and sizes and range from 30kW to 6 megawatts.

The advantages of diesel generators are that they require less maintenance and have more longevity.  Diesel generators are normally thirty to fifty percent cheaper to operate than gas. A 1,500 rpm water-cooled diesel unit operates on the average of 12,000 to 30,000 hours before major maintenance is required.  A gas, water-cooled unit operates 6,000 to 10,000 hours before it needs major maintenance, because they are built on a lighter duty gasoline engine block and burn hotter than diesel generators.

Features to Look for in a Diesel Generators

Air or Liquid Cooling
Air-cooling engines require a tremendous amount of air and may require ducting, and they are noisier than liquid cooling.  Modern air-cooled engines are suitable for many applications especially short run, portable or standby uses. Liquid cooling offers quieter operation and more even temperature control resulting in a longer engine life.
Intake Air
All quality generators have intake air filters with replaceable filter elements.
Mufflers
Most generators come equipped with an industrial grade muffler. All enclosed generators should be equipped with at least a residential muffler and preferably a critical muffler.
Lubrication System
Larger, 3-phase generators should have a filter bypass, and smaller units a full flow, spin-on oil filter. Your generator should have low oil alarms and shutdowns, which help protect your equipment.

Power Outages

Sizing is the most critical step in choosing your diesel generator. A set that is too small won’t last and could cause damage to your electrical equipment. If it is too large, the engine will carbon up, which means excess fuel consumption and early failure. We recommend that a generator set never run continuously with less than 40% load,  50% to 70% is best. Remember to take into consideration your elevation and normal and extremes air temperatures, because these conditions will lower generator output.

Motor load is another important consideration.  It is important to consider motor starting load. We recommend that a motor requires up to three times more wattage than running loads. When a generator is inadequate to your motor's starting needs, it may make it more difficult to start motors. Your manufacturer will be able to help you in all of these areas and pick the right generator for your application.

The most important factor is to make sure you pick a major brand.  We do not know why people would consider an inferior or off brand, because it is difficult finding parts, service or support. Save yourself some grief and buy a major brand of engine.
