Explosion-Proof Motors

Explosion Proof MotorExplosion-proof motors are used in hazardous locations such as chemical, oil and gas sector industries. They usually range in size from 1/4 HP to 300 HP and in frame sizes up to NEMA 449T

The operation of systems in areas with explosive air-gas or air-dust mixtures require motors equipped with special protection features. Explosion-proof motors have enclosures that are constructed in such a way that the motor does not  represent an explosion or a fire hazard. The gaskets are of improved quality to increase heat resistance and have an external protective conductor connection installed. Reinforced fan guards and brake sealing rings additionally retained with clamping strips are also standard for most explosion-proof motors.

When purchasing an explosion-proof motor, there are some things to take into consideration.  Below is an overview of classifications, groups and divisions in which sometimes can get confusing on what type of explosion-proof motor will work for your application.

Classifications:

With three major classifications, the UL classification for hazardous location motors is based on the atmosphere in which the motor will be operating under normal conditions.

  • Class I for gases, vapors and/or flammable liquids.

  • Class II for combustible dusts.

  • Class III for ignitable fibers and/or filings.

Groups:

The groups are determined by ignitable volatility or explosiveness and the concentration of the material present. They are rated by the highest combustible atmosphere with Group A being the most volatile and the progressively less volatile. The following is only a partial listing of atmospheres that relate to each group:

  • Group A - Acetylene.

  • Group B - Hydrogen, butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and equivalent hazardous materials.

  • Group C - Cyclopropane, ethyl ether, ethylene and equivalent hazardous materials.

  • Group D - Acetone, alcohol, ammonia, benzene, benzyls, butane, gasoline, hexane, lacquer solvent vapors, naphtha, natural gas, propane and equivalent hazardous materials.

Oil Refinery where explosion proof motors are used

  • Group E - Metal dusts including aluminum, magnesium and their alloys, and other equivalent hazardous materials.

  • Group F - Carbon black, charcoal, coal or coke dusts.

  • Group G - Flour, starch, grain, combustible plastics and chemical dusts.

Divisions:

They are determined by the atmosphere that is present under normal operating conditions.

  • Division 1 - Relates to an atmosphere that normally contains highly combustible materials.

  • Division 2 - Involves a normal atmosphere that is noncombustible but can change due to an accident or
    equipment malfunction.

CAUTION
Motors misapplied in hazardous environments can cause a fire or explosion resulting in destruction of property, serious injury or death. Only the end user or a qualified underwriter is to identify and select the proper class, group, division, and temperature code motor to meet the requirements of each installation.

One thing we cannot stress enough, always buy your motors and 3-phase power needs from reputable manufacturers that can offer you quality products plus technical support from start to finish.
