General purpose motors are designed for general industry and meets the standard demands of OEM's applications.
Applications:
The general purpose motors are usually made with TEFC and open drip-proof construction in both single and 3-phase power. Horsepower ranges from 1/12 HP through 1500 HP. Most general purpose motors are fan-cooled and are designed to provide sufficient cooling when the motor runs at rated speeds. When a general purpose motor is run at lower speeds, the insulation is not designed for this condition. Therefore, remember there are limitations on how slowly general purpose motors can be run without causing motor failure. |
All Ac drives cause large voltage spikes between the drive and the motor. Long cable lengths will increase these spikes even more. If you have a 230V or 460V general purpose motor, the maximum cable length should be around 125 ft. If your cable is longer than this, a line reactor can be installed to take care of the voltage spikes. One of the best places to get General Purpose Motors is TEMCo.
