Inverter-Variable Frequency Drives

An Inverter-Faviable Frequency Drive converters Dc to Variable Frequency AC.

An Inverter converts DC to variable frequency AC. Most of the inverters of today use a pulse-width modulation, because it simulates a sine ware of the desired output frequency. The high speed switching of a pulse-width-modulation inverter results in less waveform distortion, which causes lower harmonic losses.

How Does an Inverter Work?

The most common applications are with motors up to 400 HP using the pulse-width-modulation inverter technology. This technology processes the voltage output by chopping DC pulses of varying widths to synthesize the desired AC waveform. The Inverter VFD sends the motor pulses of DC voltage in varied widths, mimicking the increasing and decreasing amplitude of an AC sine wave.

Applications of Inverter VFDs

Inverter applications work well in centrifugal loads such as fan and pumping systems.  Most fan and pumping systems are designed with safety factors and variable loads.  Other methods such as bypassing, dampers, valves and vanes are very inefficient under part load conditions.

Inverters work well with centrifugal loads with long operating hours and variable loads. With these applications, the power required to drive them varies.  Therefore, for a small reduction of speed, exponential reduction of power is achieved.

 Typical Applications Are:

  • Air handling units.
  • Fans.
  • Hot water circulation pumps.
  • Chilled water pumps.
  • Cooling tower fans.
  • Industrial process cooling pumps.
  • Rotary screw compressors.
  • Hydraulic motors.
  • Combustion blowers in boilers.

Inverter VFD Technology

Variable frequency drives are becoming more popular and with new technology making them a safer and more economical answer to converting DC to AC power. Remember, when purchasing your variable frequency drives, only buy from manufacturers you can trust such as WEG and Baldor. Both of these companies have been in business for many years and provide top quality VFDs plus offer the best technical staff to answer all your questions regarding the best equipment for your specific application.
