Soft-Start Variable Frequency Drives

Soft Start VFDWe know that engineers have selected VFDs for energy saving and process improvements for many years. These drives can also reduce mechanical stress by using a soft start.

When you start a motor with on line power, it stresses the mechanical systems. Belts slip and chains jump, and high pressure develops in pipes and ducts. Reducing voltage and frequency starting will decrease this mechanical stress.

VFDs work by varying output voltage along with output frequency. Output voltage varies with the frequency to control a motor's torque and speed. Controlling torque and speed results in a soft start as the motor's speed accelerates by a pre-programmed rate. Acceleration time in most VFDs may be varied from five  to 360 seconds.  

How does the Soft Start Work?

The soft start works by constantly monitoring the voltage and current going to the motor. According to a Department of Energy study, 44% of motors in industrial facilities operate at 40% or less of full load. The problem is that AC induction motors operate the most efficiently at around 75% of full rated load.

With the soft start, it maintains the motor at a constant, full operating speed. When the load on the motor increases, the soft start reads this condition and increases the power to the motor so it does not stall. The soft start works like a cruise control works in cars.  The soft start makes the motor more efficient and, therefore, can save 15 to 40 percent in energy consumption.
