Variable Frequency Drives as Phase Converters

Variable Frequency Drives should be used to control one motor at a time.
Variable frequency drives work by taking the constant frequency sinusoidal AC input and turning it into DC; then the VFD chops it into a variable frequency AC output with a blocky wave form. By altering the frequency of the wave form, the drive is able to control the speed of the motor.  By altering the nominal voltage, VFDs are able to control the power available. One of the positives of a VFD is that it provides considerable control over the operation of a motor by controlling the frequency.

Other benefits of using a VFD is the ability to soft start the load. By spreading the motor acceleration over a longer period of time, you can completely eliminate all the inrush current demanded  by a motor to get it up to running speed from a dead stop. The cold start ramp time is easily programmed  on a VFD. Soft starting motors eliminate any voltage drops or dimming of the lights as you see with the phase converters.

If you use a VFD, the filter capacitors have a limited life and must be replaced occasionally. With an industrial motor running hard for 12 hours a day, the lifespan of the VFD is usually five years. Replacement capacitors don't cost much, but you should be aware when the rectifier section of the drive is working especially hard.

The VFD does have its limitations. Because of its non-sinusoidal nature of the wave form, they should only be used to control motors. Variable frequency drives can only control one motor at a time, otherwise all the motors will change speed in lock-step with the main motor. A VFD can turn a motor at low speed, but it could cause it to burn out as the cooling fan in the motor is shaft mounted and becomes ineffective at low speeds.

Not all phase converters are the same, many of them only convert unbalanced 3-phase power. High quality phase converters are built to last and are reliable.  They are just as efficient as utility 3-phase power.

When choosing your phase converter, make sure you select a reliable, quality manufacturer like TEMCo or ACE Phase Converters.  For more details on their Phase Converters check out their respective web sites.
